Co-hosted with Bedford Camera & Video and proudly sponsored by Canon, this hands-on astrophotography experience is designed for curious creatives, adventurers, and night-owls who want to learn by doing. Canon and Bedford will provide camera gear to use during the workshop, so all you need to bring is a sense of wonder, a willingness to learn, and a love for being under the stars.

You’ll learn the fundamentals of Milky Way photography, from camera settings and composition to star movement, planning apps, and creative techniques, while shooting in a dark-sky location perfect for astrotourism. This isn’t a lecture… it’s an experience. Expect real-time guidance, beginner-friendly instruction, and plenty of moments where everything just clicks.

Whether you’re content-curious, adventure-driven, or dreaming of your first Milky Way shot, this Boot Camp is built to remove the barriers and get you shooting the stars—fast.

**This immersive Milky Way Boot Camp gives you exclusive, private access to one of the most unique landscapes in the region—the Salt Plains Wildlife Refuge after hours. With unobstructed 360° panoramic sky views, it feels like standing beneath a weighted blanket of stars as the core dances across the horizon.

On night two, we shift to the dramatic silhouettes of the Gloss Mountains, where you’ll learn how to blend the beauty of the stars with strong foreground elements and compelling landscape details.

Throughout the weekend, you’ll receive hands-on instruction on focusing in the dark, composing for the Milky Way, dialing in exposure, and building a confident workflow you can take anywhere the stars shine with a 3 hour editing course.

Whether you’re brand-new to night photography or ready to push your skills further, Milky Way Boot Camp is designed to ignite creativity, deepen your understanding of the night sky, and send you home with images you never imagined you could capture.

Equipment Needed for the Milky Way Boot Camp co-hosted with Bedford Camera & Video and sponsored by Canon:

DSLR or Mirrorless Camera
Wide Angle Lens (need one that can open up to f/2.8) e.g. 15-35mm, 14mm prime
Mid Range Lens (e.g. 24mm-70mm, 50mm)
Long Range Lens (e.g. 100-400mm, 70-200mm)
Intervalometer – some cameras have them built-in
Tripod
Polarizer Filter & Light Pollution Filter for wide angle lens
Memory Cards
Extra Batteries
Headlamp/Flashlight
Appropriate Outdoor Footwear (boots are best)
Laptop with Photoshop 2026, Lightroom Classic, and either Starry Landscape Stacker (Mac) or Sequator (PC)
External storage for photos

Friday
- 3 PM Check In
- 5:30 PM Enter Salt Plains to scout and watch sunset
- 8:00 PM Blue Hour
- 9:00 PM Milky Way
- 12:00 AM End Instruction
Saturday
- 12-3 PM Editing Course
- 5:30 PM Enter Gloss Mountain to scout and study geology
- 7:30 PM Mesa Compositions on back side of park
- 9:00 PM Milky Way
- 12:00 AM End Instruction
Sunday
- 10:00 AM Goodbye Brunch and Q&As

She took us to the perfect locations that she had scouted ahead of the workshop, and provided each participant personal attention to ensure everyone came home with an incredible image. The editing portion of the workshop was just as incredible as the photography. She is a very knowledgeable and patient instructor and helped each one of us at our own level to edit the images we captured in the field. Highly recommend!

I learned a lot in the field on composition and in the editing class. Brennen is a great teacher with patience and is very knowledgeable with a great personality. You can tell she loves teaching and helping people learn milky way photography. I 'm looking forward to another workshop in Oct and highly recommend Brennen to anyone interested in learning landscape or milky way photography. Her timing and instructions (verbal, written, and in person) make it easy to follow along and she leaves plenty of time for questions and problems with equipment.  I had a such a relaxing but exhaustive 3 day weekend! Up at 3:30am to catch the first rising of the Milky Way... Homemade breakfast with more food than we could eat! I learned so much from Brennen and she brought us to the most beautiful places. I can’t believe that I took some of the photos I’ve collected from this trip.
