Mowdy Milky Way Round Up Recap

Milky Way over mustangs

Friday Arrival and Golden Hour Ride

The Mowdy Milky Way Round Up was one of those you don’t shake off anytime soon.

We kicked things off Friday evening by meeting up and heading straight out into the Oklahoma backcountry on ATVs. Golden hour out there feels bigger, like the sky stretches a little farther and the light hangs on a little longer. We made our way into the pasture that holds the wildest mustangs on the property. These were the ones that still carry that untamed spirit. You observe, respect, and let them exist in their world.

We wrapped up shooting at Rock House through blue hour, letting that last soft light fade into night.

Dinner and a Short Night Ahead

After a full evening, we refueled with dinner carried out from a local favorite, Gonzales Mexican. Nothing fancy, just good food and even better company.

Then came the reality check. Alarms were set for 2 AM.

Chasing the Milky Way

We rolled back out under the cover of darkness, chasing the Milky Way across the pastures. Conditions were not perfect. Clouds played peek a boo with the sky, but that only added to the experience.

We worked through it all. Trackers humming, cameras clicking, stacking exposures, and adjusting on the fly. Nights like that are a reminder that astrophotography is not about perfection. It is about persistence and adapting to what the sky gives you.

After a couple of hours, we packed it in for a quick cat nap before sunrise.

Sunrise with the Herd

Sunrise brought a completely different energy. We rode out again, this time into the pasture with the friendly herd. These are the ones that come up to you and let you in just a little closer, some even let you pet them.

There is something grounding about being out there in that quiet morning light, surrounded by animals that have seen more open sky than most of us ever will.

Midday Reset and Editing

Back at camp, we slowed things down. Breakfast, a well earned nap, and then an editing course to start bringing those moments to life.

Watching everyone piece together their images from the night before is always one of my favorite parts of these weekends.

Another Evening with the Mustangs

That evening, we headed back out for sunset and blue hour with the mustangs. Different light, same magic. It never really gets old.

Sunday Slow Down

Sunday morning had other plans. Clouds rolled in and shut down any chance at astro. Instead of fighting it, we leaned into it.

We slept in and listened to the rain hit the metal roof. No alarms and no rushing. Just being present in the moment.

Heading Home

After breakfast, we packed up and said our goodbyes. Like always, we did not leave empty handed. There were new images, but more importantly new friendships, shared experiences, and stories that will last far longer than any photo.

Weekends like this are exactly why I do what I do. If you would like to experience the Mowdy vibe, be sure to check out Tails & Trails this fall!
